North Penn Schools Participate in Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Projects
Schools across the North Penn School District held several service projects to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leading up to the federal holiday.
Bridle Path Elementary collected and assembled bags to benefit Manna on Main, a local organization supporting those experiencing food insecurity. Students packed and decorated over 480 bags of tea, hot chocolate, granola bars, and other non-perishable, healthy food items.
Montgomery Elementary Home & School Association hosted three events for families. The group collected new and gently used children’s books for the Montgomery County Foster Care Services, providing children in foster care with books. The Welcome Home project collected craft supplies and books for children and adults learning English. The Cradles to Crayons project created Back to School cards for the 2022-2023 school year.
The Penndale Middle School Leo Club, Voices of Empowerment, and National Junior Honor Society organized a Sock Roll and Breakfast Bag Collection on January 10, 2022 for community members experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. Through many donations from the Penndale community, the clubs assembled 151 sock rolls to The Giving Tree, helping families in need. The rolls contained socks, the number one requested item for those experiencing homelessness, wrapped with granola bars and a tag created by students. The breakfast bags contained shelf-stable breakfast items along with a hand-made card by students.
York Avenue Elementary Home & School Association is organizing a school clean-up in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Interested community members can join on January 17, 2022 at 10 AM on the York Avenue playground to help pick up trash, sticks, and rake leaves. Trash and leaf bags are provided, individuals should provide their own rake.

Often we forget the true meaning of a day off school and work, and it is important to give back when we are able. I am truly proud of the excellent work from all of our schools to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his mission of unity,” said Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed. D, Superintendent of NPSD schools.
Designated as a federal holiday in 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is often celebrated as a Day of Service to honor King and his legacy of nonviolent protest against discrimination. North Penn School District has honored this Day of Service through many volunteer projects. Many NPSD donations go to Manna on Main, an organization committed to ending hunger in the North Penn region.
