North Penn High School student Yordanos Lemma has been selected to attend the Citizen’s University 2022 Cohort of the Youth Collaboratory.

As part of the Youth Collaboratory, Yordanos will travel to three cities around the United States during 2022 with other members of the Cohort and meet national civic leaders. Participants will explore how civic power is generated, and learn how to make changes in their local communities.

To finish the program, each participant will create their own Power Project focused on changing the civic culture in their community and catalyzing change. Previous Power Projects include creating a local Youth Council in collaboration with local government, creating a podcast discussing microaggressions, and launching a website to educate voters about local elections.

“North Penn is extremely proud of Yordanos and her accomplishments, and we look forward to seeing what she can do in the future,” said Curtis R. Dietrich, NPSD Superintendent. “Yordanos is a prime example of the excellence coming from our North Penn community, and what can be accomplished with hard work and determination.”

Yordanos was one of 24 students from around the United States selected to participate in the Youth Collaboratory, and the only student from Pennsylvania. The program is offered to high school sophomores and juniors who demonstrate their devotion to positive, powerful change and civic participation. The application pool is highly competitive for those who want to learn how to use their civic power.

The Youth Collaboratory serves to equip the next generation with the skills to build civic power and use it for good. The Youth Collaboratory and Citizen University was cofounded by Eric Liu, writer, former speechwriter and Deputy Assistant for Domestic Policy for President Bill Clinton, and former member of the board of directors for the federal Corporation for National and Community Service.
